From Consumer to Producer

Most people participate in the economy primarily as consumers.

The sovereignty framework encourages an additional question: What can you produce? Production does not have to begin with a company. A person may first learn to grow food, preserve a harvest, repair something, teach a skill, create media, provide a service, or make a useful product. Repeated practice can develop competence; competence can create value; value can become exchange; and exchange can sometimes develop into enterprise. The journey is therefore not “stop consuming.” Everyone consumes.

The objective is to expand participation so that more households also contribute knowledge, products, services, skills, businesses, and productive assets to the economy.
